What is Swiss made?
To be considered a genuine Swiss-made watch, a watch must meet a number of criteria defined by Swiss legislation. These requirements mainly concern the origin of the components, the place of assembly and the expertise of the staff employed.
- The movement: The motor of a watch, also known as the calibre or mechanism, must be manufactured in Switzerland. It must also be assembled and inspected in this country. Most of the movements used in Swiss-made watches therefore come from the famous manufacturers ETA, Sellita or Ronda.
- The case : Although the case of a watch does not have to be entirely made in Switzerland for it to qualify as swiss made, it is generally made locally for top-of-the-range and luxury models. Swiss brands often work with foundries and manufacturers whose expertise is recognised throughout the country.
- Swiss" qualification: At least 60 % of the total manufacturing cost (excluding assembly) of a watch must be generated by all the components that qualify as "Swiss". This applies to internal parts such as balance wheels, gears and springs, as well as external elements such as dials, hands and bracelets.
- Assembly : The watch must be assembled, adjusted and checked in Switzerland by expert watchmakers. This meticulous work guarantees the highest level of quality and optimum precision for each watch.
The advantages of a Swiss made watch
Swiss made watches are highly prized for their high quality and inimitable style. Here are some of the main advantages you can expect from this type of watch:
- Precision: The movement of a Swiss-made watch undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that it is sufficiently accurate. Some models even benefit from chronometer certification issued by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), attesting to their exceptional precision.
- Robustness : Swiss-made watches are designed to withstand the test of time and outdoor conditions. They are often fitted with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, reinforced water-resistance or hypoallergenic materials, guaranteeing their durability and reliability.
- Aesthetics : Swiss watchmaking is renowned for its fine sense of finish and detail. Swiss-made watches often boast a refined design and meticulous finishing that will not go unnoticed by connoisseurs.
- Value : Although Swiss-made watches are often associated with high prices, they are in fact a worthwhile long-term investment. Indeed, these watches tend to retain their value for longer than their competitors, thanks to their quality of manufacture and the reputation of the brands that sell them.

Swiss made: still synonymous with watchmaking excellence?
The 'Swiss Made' label on a watch is recognised worldwide and often associated with an image of prestige and reliability, although it is not the only indicator of a watch's quality. The current criteria for affixing this label may be perceived as less rigorous than some watchmaking purists might expect. However, this in no way diminishes the traditional excellence of Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship, nor does it suggest that watches bearing this label are of lower quality than those made entirely in Switzerland. In fact, it allows Swiss brands to remain competitive in the global market, while preserving the heritage and expertise for which Swiss watches are renowned around the world.
